The old adage says, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”. Your regular dental cleanings may seem like they’re mostly for cosmetic reasons, but they are so much more! They are an important line of defense against periodontal disease, and as essential to your overall health as your regular medical doctor’s check-ups.
The clinical term for dental cleaning is oral prophylaxis, which means “prevention of oral disease”; during your cleaning, our hygienists look for early signs of periodontal disease, dental decay, and other changes in the soft tissue of the mouth that could lead to oral cancer.
In addition, some systemic diseases – like heart disease and diabetes – often present themselves first inside the mouth, so early detection extends beyond just oral disease. A cleaning helps prevent against periodontal disease by removing bacteria-laden plaque and tartar build-up both above and below the gumline. Your hygienist will also instruct you on the best way to brush and floss in order to promote and maintain good oral health.
Our hygienists are friendly, caring and highly trained dental professionals who expertly evaluate the health of your teeth and gums. Your dentist will work with your hygienist to review her findings and make recommendations to you regarding your oral and dental health. Together, we will ensure that you have the brightest smile and healthiest mouth!
