After researching all the health-promoting diets and different ways of eating available to us in this country, Groton Wellness found the GAPS Diet (Gut and Psychology Syndrome Diet so named for its successful treatment of autism, schizophrenia, ADD and other previously inscrutable neurological disorders), developed by Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, to be the most sensible and sustainable diet for the promotion of vibrant health and well being. It’s true that it has amazing therapeutic healing properties, but we’ve chosen the GAPS Diet because itresonates with Groton Wellnesson many levels: medical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual. It includes foods that truly nourish the mind, bodyand soul! Recent research has revealed that microbes are an essential and dominant part of our human ecosystem, so it makes sense to heal this potentially health reviving habitat into one that promotes optimal energy and nourishment for all our tissues and inhabitants.
At the core of the dietary recommendationsare wholesome, delicious foods that support the beneficial flora in the digestive tract and the elimination of faux foods that feed and sustain disease-promoting bacteria in the gut. It relies on organic produce, fermented foods, cold pressed oils, home-made bone broths, and other organic animal products. It heals the gut and nourishes the bacterial flora that co-evolved within us: the bacteria that flourish in the presence of fermented foods and animal fats and promote balanced health. Eliminatingnutrient-depleted processed foods, simple carbs, food additives, preservatives, colorings and other synthetic ingredients will eventually starve out disease-causing bacteria.
The GAPS Diet not only heals the intestinal tissues and nourishes the “good flora” in the gut; it also supports overall health by reducing systemic inflammation caused by chronic exposure to pro-inflammatory “foreign”, synthesized molecules found processed foods. When we eliminate man-made chemicals from our diets, our immune systems calm down. This supports our potential for optimal immune function and vibrant health.
The other part that we really love about the GAPS Diet is that it promotes and supports regional agriculture, humane animal treatmentand sustainable local organic farming.
