An allergy is like an immune system “panic attack”. Allergies are something we acquire throughout life, and some people are more susceptible than the others. One must have at least one contact with a substance to become sensitive/allergic to it.
An allergy is a hyperactive response of the immune system to certain substances (called allergens) that are ‘foreign’ to our bodies. We can develop allergies to everything from food to dust to metals to pollen and much more. Before you are treated in our office, you will be asked to list all allergies you have on your New Patient Questionnaire. Our medical staff may be able to assist you in treating your allergies in conjunction with your dental treatment.
The following are the most important types of allergies that your dentist should know about – prior to beginning your treatment:
Please let us know if you have ever had an allergic reaction to any medication – dental anesthetics included. We offer several alternatives to common anesthetics and pain relievers, and are happy to contact your health care provider if you cannot remember the name of the medication.
Many patients we see are not allergic to chemicals so much as they are very sensitive to them. We strive to maintain a fragrance-free office staff for everyone’s comfort and employ methods designed to minimize exposure to the chemicals necessary in dental treatment. Please let us know if you are chemically sensitive so that every effort can be made to make your visit to the office as comfortable as possible.
While a true allergy to dental materials rarely exists, we make every effort to use materials that have been determined to be the most compatible. Dental materials are chemicals, and as such must be used wisely and safely. To aid us in selecting the best materials for your dental needs, we very often recommend Biocompatibility Testing.
For your safety and for the benefit of the environment, Groton Wellness Dental Spa does not use latex products nor do we use any mercury containing materials.
